瓦斯科·达伽马的远航令所有人惊讶。它给欧洲的世界地名词典增加了1800个新地名，并揭示了关于东印度的新信息宝库。它很快将迫使全球很大范围内的各利益相关方——基督徒、穆斯林和印度教徒——进行全新的战略筹划，并将不可避免地导致商业冲突与战争。对曼努埃尔一世来说，他的自信心因此大涨。他现有的头衔是“大海此岸的葡萄牙与阿尔加维[55]国王，大海彼岸的非洲之王，几内亚领主”，如今又加上了“埃塞俄比亚、阿拉伯半岛、波斯与印度的征服、航海与贸易之王”。这是对贸易垄断权的大胆主张，也表达了葡萄牙的意图：大海应当是有主人的。甚至在达伽马返回之前，国王就已经在为下一次远航铺设龙骨、建造新船了。与此同时，他下令对达伽马远航的所有航海图严格保密，泄露机密者一律处死。知识就是财富和权力。
